Simple Rhythms Lead to Seeing God

Every Monday I get a notification on my phone about the specific week of pregnancy I’m entering. The notification is a sweet, little reminder, and often, a surprise to me of how far along we’re getting in this journey.

Somehow as each week progresses the ongoing development of our pregnancy slips through the cracks of the last seven days.

Each time my phone reminds me which week I’m entering and what developments our baby is going through, a thrill runs through me. There’s nothing quite like this feeling.

If your heart and your eyes are open, you’ll find God sends you the same kind of reminders of His presence in your life, as well.

A walk through the neighborhood, grabbing coffee with a friend, or maybe, a simple afternoon spent at home. God shows up in the simple rhythms of life, perhaps, when you’re not even looking for Him.

Of course, intentionally seeking out the Lord will direct your steps to Him. And how wonderful and amazing it is that He promises we will always be able to find Him when we seek Him?

When intentionally seeking God, our focus shifts toward seeing Him in big and small ways. If you’re looking for Him, you will find Him. He won’t leave you hanging.

It is the unintentional glimpse of the hand of God at work in our lives that I find the sweetest. They happen when our mind is full of to-do lists or tasks, but for a brief moment our attention on these things lapses. In the lapse, our eyes find Him where He always was.

These reminders tell us something about our Heavenly Father and the way He feels about us. They say, He doesn’t simply love and care for you when you’re looking for Him.

They say God loves and cares for me in such a big way that even when I feel scattered by a busy life or I am simply too busy to give Him a thought, He’s still thinking of me. He wants to remind me of His unaltered presence in my life.

It’s as if He is reaching out a hand for my shoulder when the to-do list is a mile long or my heart feels unsettled, saying, “Spend just one minute with me.”

We are allowed to rest in the Father and with the Father. He greatly desires for you to enter His presence, casting off your burdens and finding the joy He offers so freely. Give yourself permission to set the phone down, turn the tv off, and spend a moment in the quiet of God’s presence.

Keep your eyes and your heart open for the simple moments God will meet you in your life.

I want to leave you with a simple prayer I heard on Emily P. Freeman’s podcast, The Next Right Thing. I’m altering the second part to hopefully meet you where you are today:

“May the Father be your sustainer, the Son be your defender, and the Spirit be your comforter” as you open your heart to the simple rhythms of life.
