On Change,  On Trust

A Prayer for Election Day and the Ones that Follow

Oh, God, how wonderful and great you are, how vast is your knowledge.

Lord, as we enter into a period of unknowns grant us the peace and understanding that you will remain unchanged by the results of our election.

As we sit deep in the waiting, may our burdened hearts be reminded of your grace upon us, in us and through us, and may we show grace to all who surround us.

God, as our minds frantically scurry for results of an earthly election, let our hearts remain tethered to your heavenly kingdom and seek to spread the hope and joy and salvation offered there; the only real hope we have.

When our souls feel shaken by what could happen and how our lives might be affected by our leaders, may your peace that is greater than all understanding slowly drip through our veins, coursing through our bodies.

When we begin to feel there is no hope left for humanity here in this earthy, wounded place, send reminders of your steadfast lovingkindness toward your people.

If hateful words and thoughts rise within us toward our brothers and sisters, may we be reminded of Jesus and the love he showed to all people, especially those who disagreed with him.

Let us not forget the life we share with these people and the influence we have over them, and prevent us from speaking out of anything but love.

May we have eyes to see our friends, family, neighbors, and all people with your eyes, Jesus, as loved and cherished daughters and sons of the Most High.

God grant us the wisdom to know when to speak, when to remain silent, and when to move to action.

Lord, let our hearts align with our minds. Keep our emotions in the passenger seat of the car because they don’t have all the facts.

God, as we wait the hours or days or weeks it might take to learn the result of the election, may we lean on your understanding, may we seek your wisdom through your word, and may your love pour out of us, overshadowing any schemes of the enemy.

As we walk this familiar, cracked and crumbling road together, may we not forget who is along for the ride with us.

Send us reminders, Lord, to pray for our opponents as they slander us in the street, to pray for our country as we imagine what is to come, to pray for ourselves that our hearts of stone will weep.

Help us remember this election will not bring us the peace we so desperately seek, but that it should point us back to you, the giver of peace.

Help us remember you are unchanging and forever, much longer than our short lives here or the life of our country.

You have been in control since before time began, and you will remain unshaken by the events of today or any other day.

May we remember, the sun will rise tomorrow and joy comes in the morning.
